Senior Product Manager, Finance
PortlessThis Senior Product Manager role focuses on building the end-to-end compliance infrastructure for a cross-border e-commerce platform, transforming manual operations into a scalable, merchant-facing product.
What you’d own
- End-to-end compliance flow from merchant catalog to cleared shipment
- Build vs. buy strategy for compliance tools and partnerships
- Data quality systems for classification and valuation metrics
- Merchant-facing portal features for self-service compliance
Who it’s for
A fit if you…
- ✓5+ years of product experience in data-heavy domains
- ✓Experience in cross-border commerce, logistics, or supply chain
- ✓Proven ability to make build-vs-buy decisions and own the outcomes
- ✓Strong technical writing skills for strategy and decision docs
Not for you if…
- ✗You prefer a well-defined feature set with clear boundaries
- ✗You want to be a subject matter expert (e.g., customs law/trade counsel)
- ✗You prefer working from a backlog rather than being forward-deployed
Reading between the lines
- The '0 to 1' focus and lack of an existing product mean you will face high ambiguity in the first 6 months.
- The emphasis on removing work from CS/Ops teams suggests a heavy focus on internal tooling as much as external features.
- Requirement to be 'forward-deployed' implies a need for high autonomy and ability to translate messy operational pain into technical requirements.

Full job description
The short version Every order Portless ships moves money in two directions. We bill merchants for shipping, fulfillment, storage, duties and taxes, and we pay carriers, warehouses and partners across several countries and currencies. Our P&L sits in the middle. We've grown fast, and we're investing in the systems behind that money flow to match. We're hiring a Senior Product Manager to own it end to end: from rate card to invoice to cash, and from carrier bill to audited cost.
About Portless Portless is changing the face of global e-commerce. By decoupling brands from traditional, expensive domestic warehousing, we let e-commerce companies ship directly from manufacturing hubs to global consumers in as little as three to five days. We move packages to 75+ countries for hundreds of DTC brands, with millions of packages shipped annually, 99.8% pick-and-pack accuracy, and 98% on-time delivery. We're a small, remote-first team growing fast, and the work you do here shows up in a merchant's business, and on our own books, within weeks.
What you'll own We're building out our finance infrastructure for the next stage of growth. You'll set the product direction for: Billing (order to cash). Rate cards, pricing rules, invoicing, disputes and collections. You'll own our billing engine from the product side, including rolling it out across our merchant base. Cost audit (procure to pay). Ingesting carrier and partner invoices, matching them to what we shipped, and catching discrepancies automatically.
Margin visibility. A shipment-level view of revenue, cost and pass-through charges that finance and leadership can rely on. Duties and taxes. How tariffs, VAT and other pass-through charges are calculated, billed and collected, in close partnership with our compliance team. The merchant experience. How merchants see, understand and ask questions about their charges. You'll be the bridge between finance, operations and engineering, turning finance needs into a clear roadmap.
What success looks like First 90 days An end-to-end view of how money moves through Portless today, and a clear picture of where it needs to go A finance product strategy and sequenced roadmap, aligned with finance, operations and engineering Priorities set and defended in writing, with the reasoning and tradeoffs behind them First 6 months Most merchants billed automatically and on time Our largest carriers' invoices matched and audited automatically Finance can see margin by shipment, merchant and lane Measurable time given back to the finance and CS teams What we're looking for Product craft first.
This is the bar we're least flexible on. 5+ years in product management owning a complex, data-heavy domain You can map a messy process to where data originates, where it breaks, and where the leverage is You get your own answers with SQL or AI tools, and check claims against what actually happened You ship what works this quarter while building toward the right end state, and you write it up clearly Finance and logistics experience. You've built product for billing, AP, carrier audit, payments or financial infrastructure, ideally in logistics, freight or fulfillment You're fluent in rate cards, accruals, pass-through vs. revenue, invoice matching, and how operational data reaches the GL You work closely with accountants and finance ops and know when to bring in the CFO.
This isn't an accounting role Exposure to duties, tariffs or VAT is a strong plus How you work. Forward-deployed: close to finance, our China operations and merchants, with evening calls and potential travel to China You work off one canonical roadmap alongside the rest of product You partner across finance, engineering, operations, CS, compliance and merchants You look for the systemic version of the problem Portless is an equal opportunity employer.
About Portless
See all roles →Portless is a fulfillment company that flips the DTC inventory model: instead of shipping containers of stock to US warehouses months ahead, brands hold inventory at its Shenzhen hub — within two days of most Chinese factories — and only ship each unit by air once a customer has actually bought it. The pitch is air-freight speed at closer to sea-freight economics, cutting lead times and freeing up the cash normally frozen in inventory, with delivery to 75+ countries and Shopify and WooCommerce integrations. The founders ran a $50M DTC brand and built this because the legacy model was breaking them. Founded in 2023, it raised an $18M Series A led by Commerce Ventures in 2025 and is still a small team doing infrastructure-level work.
